How do we implement a sustainable way of working?
We all share the same address, which is our lovely planet. The fashion or apparel industry has an often underestimated impact on the development of our planet. The fashion industry accounts for about 8-10% of global carbon emissions* and nearly 20% of wastewater. This shows that there is quite some room for improvement within this industry.
A change always starts with your own actions. That is why we would like to make our contribution by prioritizing sustainability within different aspects of the production- and delivery process. Each aspect is listed and elaborated on below.
Fair production process
Good working conditions and a fair wage
Our products are produced in Istanbul (Turkey) and locally in the Netherlands. The focus is primarily on good working circumstances. There is a high involvement in the production process to ensure that tailors work under good conditions and to prevent any child labor. In the Netherlands, the clothing is (partly) produced by experienced tailors with a refugee background who started a new life in the Netherlands.
Sustainable packaging
Compostable mailers
We minimize the amount of plastics in our chain by shipping the products with environmentally friendly compostable mailers. These shipping mailers are 100% biodegradable. After opening the package, the receiver can dispose it in the garden or compost pit. The mail can break down completely in three to six months. D2W technology turns ordinary plastic at the end of its useful life, in the presence of oxygen, into a material with a different molecular structure. It will break down the molecular bonds/polymer chains. At the end of the process, it is no longer a plastic and has changed into a material which is biodegradable (by bacteria and fungi) in the open environment**.
Of course, the quality of our products remains important to us as well. Therefore, we made sure that the compostable mailers are waterproof. Items won’t be affected by moisture in case they come into contact with liquids.
Eco-friendly carrier
Committed to 100% carbon neutral deliveries
Kamis Clothing cooperates with DPD for parcel deliveries in the Netherlands to ensure that all deliveries are carbon neutral. How so? DPD precisely measures their carbon footprint per parcel delivery. All emission will be reduced as much as possible (by accelerating its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction plan). However, unavoidable remaining CO2 emissions of every delivery will be fully offset by funding clean energy projects around the world in partnership with CDC Climat. This guarantees a climate-neutral delivery. On the long term, the main objective of DPD is to reach net zero emissions by 2040***.
Quality expands the lifespan
"Goedkoop is duurkoop"
At Kamis Clothing there is an aim to provide the best possible quality in terms timeless designs, the finest fabrics and a focus on the finishing-touch in the production process. We believe that this also adds to the sustainability of our brand since the items can be worn for a long(er) period of time without losing its quality and value.
This links to the Dutch saying "goedkoop is duurkoop", which indicates that it might be wise(r) to spend initially more money for quality purposes since it will last longer in the end.
Sustainable hang tags and hanging cords
Hang tags made out of recycled paper and hanging cords out of 100% hemp
The intention is to recycle as much as possible. That is why all of our hang tags are made of recycled paper, which provides a second life for these materials. In addition, the hanging cords are made out of 100% hemp. The usage of hemp is environmental friendly since hemp is naturally disease resistant and can be grown without pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. In addition, the fabric of hemp requires little water and typically no extra irrigation is required.
Offering recycling opportunities to our customers
Completing the circle for our own products
Since all clothing deserves a second life, we offer the service to our customers to recycle our products via us. This is in line with the introduction of the UPV (uitgebreide productenverantwoordelijkheid)**** for textile clothing.
Please contact us at info@kamisclothing.com in order to align with us on how we can collect our clothing and in what way it could be recycled.
